These photos have been snatched from television pictures so the quality isn’t great. Going left to right they depict:
The first is a news item on GMTV on the 21st April 1994 and came live from Liverpool where I was interviewed about a young man who was about to be birched in China for vandalism. (Do you like the trendy pony-tail?)
The second is from a documentary. I felt very strongly about the concept of Community Education and persuaded BBC2 to allow me to write and narrate this programme exploring the steps being taken in Liverpool to introduce education for the whole family; hence the title: 'Lesson with Mother'. They gave me a Producer, a Director and a Make-up team plus an editing room and two camera operators... I supplied the Vauxy Theatre Group and the script... they allowed one month to shoot the thirty minute film.
The third was the only television broadcast of 'The Moral Maze' and went out in 1994. (It is still broadcast on Radio 4) I was invited, along with Dr Adrian Rogers, Dr Ross Miles and Prof David Smith, to be examined by Dr David Cook, Janet Daley, Edward Pearce and Dr David Starkey under the chair of Michael Buerk on the premise that 'We Live in a Society that Accepts Yob Culture'. (I argued ; 'Yes, and the yobs are in the classrooms; teaching!')
The fourth shows me being interviewed for a documentary; ‘Six of the Best’ on SKY TV.
ITV’s ‘The Time and the Place’ with John Stapleton (13 Sept 95) and a discussion about the death penalty; I was the token liberal apparently..
Finally on the right; a 6 o’ clock news slot on BBCTV 22nd April 1993 where I was interviewed again about plans to re-introduce corporal punishment in schools.
